VISAS FOR SPOUSES OF MALAYSIANS

The spouse programme which avails a one year work permit for all spouses of Malaysians is no longer in available and has been replaced by a less practical and more tedious procedure.

Spouses shall remain on a dependent’s visa which is actually a normal social visa with a maximum  of 6 months visa. If the spouse continues to stay on a dependent’s visa, the second term of renewal will also be only for another 6 months in the first year of their registered marriage in Malaysia. Applicants must have had their marriage registered with the Malaysian Registrar of Marriage regardless of whether they were married overseas.  Non- Muslim couples will have to get an additional Marriage Declaration from the national Registration Dept.  For a spouse to be on a dependent’s visa initially, the Malaysian partner will have to be drawing a salary to “sponsor” the “dependent”.  Only after  the initial first year will the next renewal be considered for a length of 1 year instead of the 6 months previously given.
